Helen H. Hawkins Memorial Research Grant

Helen Hawkins was one of our outstanding members. While finishing her Ph.D. in History at UCSD, she did the research and made the application to achieve not-for-profit incorporation for SDIS. Dedicated to the rights of women, she was co-founder and first president of the San Diego chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW). During her years as Executive Director of humanities programming at KPBS-TV, she produced “California Rights,” which won an Emmy and a Silver Gavel Award. Helen returned to UCSD in 1985 where she was publications director for the Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation. She died of a rare form of cancer in 1989. The SDIS Board of Directors created the Helen Hawkins Memorial Fund in her honor; Bill Hawkins, her husband, has continued to support the fund.

Please see the President for a complete application package.

Applications accepted every year between January 1 and the last day of February. Contact Sam Gusman for more information.
