About Us
WHAT WE ARE ABOUT
The mission of San Diego Independent Scholars (SDIS) is twofold:
First, we provide a welcoming and collegial environment for the intellectual community to meet, study, discuss, learn, debate, and share ideas and concepts which we hope enriches our lives and promotes independent scholarship.
Second, we encourage the individual interested in producing scholarly work in the arts, humanities, and the sciences. Members can apply to the SDIS for financial assistance for scholarly projects from the SDIS Helen H. Hawkins Memorial Research Grant Fund. (see the President for an application).
WHO WE ARE
SDIS is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization founded in 1982 by a group of independent scholars. SDIS soon expanded its focus to emphasize the shared learning experiences of dialogue and small group discussions on various topics. SDIS is an affiliate of the National Coalition of Independent Scholars.
STUDY GROUPS
Study groups are comprised of members who share an interest and who seek to learn from study and from each other. The current study groups are as follows:
Colloquy Café
Culture
Film
Literature
Science (neuroscience)
Works-In-Progress
GENERAL MEETINGS
General meetings, open to members as well as to the public, are held during the academic year. Speakers drawn principally from the academic community and from SDIS membership present topics in the humanities, sciences, and the arts. Talks are followed by general discussion of the topic during which members of the audience can pose questions and offer comments. There are light refreshments and opportunities for mingling. General meetings are held on the third Saturday of the month at 1:30 in room 111A of the Chancellor’s Complex, UCSD (University of California, San Diego) campus.
THE SCHOLAR’S NOTEBOOK
Each member receives the SDIS newsletter, Scholar’s Notebook, published from September through May. This publication informs members about upcoming special events, topics for the general meetings, reports from study groups, activities of members, and other items of interest.
GOVERNANCE
The business of SDIS is administered by the Board of Directors elected by the membership in accordance with the bylaws of SDIS.
MEMBERSHIP
Members participate in and help support the activities of the organization. The dues are $40.00 per year (individual) or $55.00 (family). Members may join or initiate study groups, elect officers and members of the Board. They may also enjoy SDIS subsidized borrowing privileges at the UCSD libraries. Membership forms are available from the President, the Membership Chair, or online.
